Abstract

Adolescent mothers tend to fail in implementing exclusive breastfeeding. This is because adolescent mothers are less able to develop emotional bonding with their infant (secure attachment). In addition, adolescent mothers in their running of developmental tasks of being adolescent, pregnancy, and breastfeeding can become stressor mothers. This research aims to explore the experience of primiparous adolescent mothers in implementing exclusive breastfeeding in Kombos Health Centre of Manado. The methods used in this research is a qualitative design with phenomenology approach. The sampling technique here are purposive sampling and snowball to identification of informants. For data collection, the researcher conducted in-depth interview with 8 informants. There are two themes in this research. First, mothers knowledge about exclusive breastfeeding consisting of the infants growth and what people say about exclusive breastfeeding. And second, being a mother consisting of how to solve problem in exclusive breastfeeding, social support, and how to manage self-esteem as a mother. The important of a primiparous adolescent mothers knowledge and experience in implementing exclusive breastfeeding are relevant to successful activity of exclusive breastfeeding. Moreover, in a process of being a mother, a women is influence by her technique to solve problem, social support, and how adolescent mother build their self-esteem.
